Oana Puiu

SPP Head Coach
Lead Epee Coach

Oana is a former medal-winning Romanian international epeeist and is now an international medal-winning coach. Her experiences as a fencer in one of the world’s highest performing teams have provided a foundation for her exacting coaching approach. Her attention to detail, technical and tactical knowledge, and understanding of psychology, have made her one of Europe’s standout young coaches. Oana is also GB u20 National Coach.

Sam Boyle

Epee Coach

Sam has been coaching Epee at Salle Paul since 2016, formerly competing for Great Britain as an U20. After completing his studies in sports coaching science at St. Mary’s University he switched from competing to coaching full time. Many of his fencers have won national titles, as well as international tournaments and regularly competing at major championships. Sam coaches both youth and adult classes and is available for lessons during open sessions on Monday, Wednesday, Thursdays. Sam is also GB u17 National Coach.

Roman Picot

Epee Coach

Roman is a former International Cadet & Junior fencer having represented Russia before switching to coaching. His competitive career saw him win Bronze medals at the European Cadet Championships as part of the Russian team as well at an individual Junior World Cup. He left the Tyshler Fencing School in Moscow to take up a position with the Salle Paul Phoenix coaching team and has become hugely influential in developing many of our youth international fencers.

Richard Kruse

Lead Foil Coach

Four time Olympian with nine World Cup Golds and another 17 medals across World Championships, European Championships, and Grand Prix, former World No. 1 Richard Kruse is the most successful British fencer in history. A former Salle Paul member himself, Richard trained under the tutelage of the legendary Ziemowit Wojciechowski before returning to lead the Salle Paul Foil programme, passing on his world-class expertise to the next generation of foilists.

Leo Suarez

Foil Coach

A former member of the Cuban National Foil Team, Cuban Junior Under 20 Champion and Central American Champion, Leo had a successful career as an international fencer before switching to coaching full-time. Leo started working at Salle Paul and has since numerous national champions and GB international fencers.

Anthony Conyard

Foil Coach

British Fencing’s Development Coach of the Year 2016, Anthony Conyard has had a hand in helping our young fencers to achieve top cadet rankings. Anthony competed for Great Britain Veterans in World Championships and for England at the Veterans Commonwealth Games and is a double gold medallist.

Olha Kalkutina

Assistant Foil Coach

Olha has 13 years of fencing experience, starting at the age of 9. She won numerous team and individual medals while representing her native Ukraine at world level. After moving to the UK, Olha transitioned from athlete to coach, bringing with her a deep knowledge of high performance training methods and an exacting technical foundation. Olha has a natural ability to communicate and connect with athletes of all ages, and provide a fostering and nurturing learning environment.

Jon Salfield

Performance Director
Lead Sabre Coach

After eight years on the world cup circuit as an international fencer, Jon became a full time coach and has gone on to lead the GB sabre team and World and European Championships at senior and junior levels. Jon was Team GB coach at London 2012 and European Games at Krakow 2023. His athletes have reached finals and won medals at all level including European Games, European Championships and Senior World Cups. Jon is now Performance Director and leads the sabre programme at Salle Paul Phoenix.

Can Aydin

Sabre Coach
Academy Lead

Can Aydin is a Turkish sabre coach, and former international fencer, who has helped develop sabre fencing in his home country throughout his career. He brings more than 17 years of coaching experience in competitive fencing, from beginner to advanced level. His fencers have won nearly 400 medals in national and international competitions, including most notably at both the Cadet and U23 European Championships. Can is also GB u20 National Coach.

Noah Rogerson

Sabre Coach

Noah Rogerson is a British Sabre Coach and Data Analyst. He has been involved in fencing for more than 18 years, as an international fencer, referee and coach. Noah has worked with clubs in the UK and USA as well as National Federations such as Pentathlon GB. This included providing analysis for their Olympic Athletes and tactical discussions with the coaches. Noah is also GB Senior National Coach.

Luke Haynes

Assistant Sabre Coach

Luke has been involved in the sport of fencing for 15 years. He is a leading athlete in the National Team and has represented Great Britain at World and European Championships at both Senior and Junior level. Luke took on a part-time coaching role in 2025 and has become an integral part of the SPP coaching team. Luke has taken the lead in coaching many of our youth fencers at national and international events and is noted for his focus on teaching technical foundations.

Steve Petrie

S&C Lead

Steve is a former MMA fighter and rugby player, and has led S&C training for British Fencing’s Athlete Development Programme. Having been immersed in fencing from grassroots to Olympic level, he has deep knowledge of the fencing’s demands. Steve works on science-based programmes that develop complete and resilient athletes.

Thomas Cunningham-Fahie

Psychologist

Thomas is a performance psychologist with a passion for helping athletes, teams, business and performing artists to reach new heights, whilst keeping a focus on the individuals wellbeing. His philosophy is that performance and wellbeing support each other, and that both should be addressed to maximise potential.

Maria Goriup

Physiotherapist

Maria is physiotherapist working within High Performance Sport and clinical settings. She has worked with British Fencing, Cyprus Fencing and Japanese Fencing at Olympic and Paralympic level, and has also supported GB Badminton and New Zealand Netball. Maria has a Masters in physiotherapy and in Sports Rehabilitation.
