Five of our sabreurs compete at the Euros
Women’s Sabre
Caitlin Maxwell began her tournament by winning three and losing three of her poule matches. This ensured that she made it into the DEs and was seeded 32nd. Her L64 was against Anastasia Fusea (ROU) but she didn’t manage to get to the next round and lost 15-11.
Keira Donnelly-Sallows went 1V5D in her poule and didn’t manage to make it to the DE rounds.
Maria Chart didn’t manage to win any of her poule fights but was unfortunate to not do so as she lost three of them 5-4. This meant that she also got cut.
Men’s Sabre:
William Deary won four and lost two of his poule matches. This seeded him 15th going into the DEs. In the L64 he fenced against David Frumgarzts (ISR) but after a close bout, lost 15-13.
Jonathan Webb won four and lost two of his poule fights. Seeded 20th going into the knockouts, he then faced Magsud Huseynli (AZE). He put up a good fight but in the end lost the match 15-12.
Barnaby Halliwell didn’t manage to win in his poule and as a result didn’t make it to the DEs.
Samuel Allen also didn’t win in his poule and got cut before the knockout rounds.
Women’s Sabre Team:
Caitlin, Keira and Maria made up three of the four members in the GBR women’s sabre team. Their L16 match was against a tough Polish side. The bout started close but ended up with Poland pulling away and winning the match 45-32. In the 9-16 bracket they met Romania and though they always stayed in a competitive position, they weren’t able to get in the lead and lost the match 45-36.
Men’s Sabre Team:
William Deary, Samuel Allen and Jonathan Webb made up three of the places in the GBR team. In the L16 they fenced against Romania. This was always going to be a very difficult matchup and after Romania got some early wins on the board, the team was always chasing. The result was 45-22 to Romania. In the 9-16 bracket they came up against Ukraine. After being well behind for the majority of the match, William Deary pulled off an incredible final leg, scoring sixteen hits but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get them the win. The final score was 45-43 to Ukraine. The team were then placed into the 13-16 bracket and got a bye through the first round. They met Bulgaria in the 13th place playoff. In the fourth leg Samuel Allen created a comfortable lead and they held on to this for the rest of the match. The final score was 45-34.
