Public Schools’ Fencing Championships

Congratulations to Harry Roberts for winning the Master at Arms Trophy, William Lee for winning the Boys Junior Sabre, Solu Ngoka for winning the Boys Junior Epee and Kaeto Ngoku for winning the Girl’s Mount-Hayes Epee!

Harry Roberts had a fantastic three days of fencing, competing in all three weapons. He started the week off competing in the Senior Foil, finishing 11th after the two poule rounds. Comfortably making his way to the l8, he just fell short of a medal by losing 15-14 to Alex Chan. In the Senior Epee competition he made his way through the poule, seeding 30th. A bye took him through to the l64 where once again he lost by one point: this time 10-9 to Jake Bowden. On the final day he fenced in the Senior Sabre where he seeded 6th after the poules. After a bye and two well fought matches, he lost in the l8 to Kelvin Thang 15-8.

In the Boys Junior Sabre William Lee went all up in his poule, seeding 2nd. After getting a bye through the l64, he comfortably won his l32 match 15-5 against Max Wong. In the l16 he won 15-6 against George Quinn and then 15-8 against Nathan Yip in the l8. Already having secured a medal, William won his match in the semi-final, beating Austin Young 15-6. William finished a very strong day, winning the final 15-4 against Luz Habenicht.

Solu Ngoka competed in the Boys Junior Epee and started the day off very well, winning all of his poule matches. He went into the l64 as the 1st seeded fencer. in the l64 he beat Samuel Lee 15-5 and then won by the same score against Miles Wong. In the l16 he be Rocco Cheok, winning 15-8. Following this he won a close fought match against Alec Hargreves 15-14. Solu faced Seven Guo in the semi-final and won 15-9. Unfortunately his opponent had to withdraw from the final, however Solu finished the competition with a very well deserved gold medal.

Kaeto Ngoka took part in the Girls Mount-Hayes Epee. She stormed through the poules winning all her matches and got a bye through to the l32. In this match she beat Aofie Burke 10-5. She had a very good l16 match, winning 10-3 against Emma Gao. To get through to the medal rounds, Kaeto beat Emily De Bono, winning 10-4. Her semi-final proved to be a tough match but Kaeto still managed to find a way to win 10-9 against Georgina Yang. In the final she finished confidently, beating Polly Warman 10-3 and secured the gold medal.

In the Boys Mount-Hayes Foil, Quince Fung won all of his matches in the poule. Entering the DEs as number 8 seed, Quince got a bye and stormed through the l64, winning 10-1 against Miles Rogers. In the l32 he beat Sebastian Smith  10-3. Following this he won 10-6 in the l16, beating Marcus Lee. In his l8 match, Quince beat Kruze Frampton 10-5, comfortably ensuring he came away with a medal. In the semi-final he lost to Horace Fong 10-8, finishing with a very respectable bronze medal.

We also had James Martin compete in the Boys Junior Epee. He finished 51st after the poules and won his l64 match against Eric Stjernsward 15-8. He lost to Jonathan Law in the l32 15-12.

Elliot Fung Competed in the Boys Mountain-Hayes Epee, seeding 13th after the poules. In the l64 he lost to Harold Nash 10-8.

In the Boys Senior Epee, Oscar Casadio Robinson came 61st after the poules and won his l128 match 3-1 against David Dai. He also got through the l64, winning 15-6 against Max Edwards. His day finished in the l32 where he lost to Eric Wang 15-14.

Charlie Jorgeson competed in the Boys Senior Sabre. Seeding 5th after winning all of his poule matches, Charlie got a bye through to the l32. In this round he beat Jacob Armitage 15-7 and then went on to the l16 where he beat Henry White 15-10. In the l8 he lost to Aiden Lee 15-3.

Kai Morgan competed in the Boys Senior Foil and finished the day 47th.
