Commonwealth Fencing Championships

2 Golds, Sliver and Bronze in the Commonwealth team event!

 

Senior Men’s Foil Team

Oliver Strange represented England in this event. The team got a bye through the L8 and in the Semi-Final they fenced against Wales. They got an early lead which they held onto throughout the match and finished it with a confident 45-26 victory and Oliver finished with a +5 indicator. The Final was against India and proved to be a difficult match for them. The lead switched between the two teams until the end of the match where England pulled away and won 45-41.

 

Vet Men’s Epee Team

David McKay represented Wales in this event. In the Semi-Final the team fenced against South Africa B and they managed to convincingly win 45-33. They met South Africa A in the Final and finished the tournament off with a similar result to the previous match, winning 45-34.

 

Senior Women’s Sabre Team

Jenna Bray represented England in the women’s sabre. Due to the number of teams, they took part in a poule format. England produced a very convincing win against Northern Ireland, beating them 45-15. Their other match was against India which unfortunately resulted in a 45-34 loss. They finished with a silver medal.

 

Senior Men’s Epee Team

James Gowen represented England in the men’s epee. The team were seeded 2nd, meaning they got a bye through the L16. In the L8 they fenced against Nigeria A and won the match 45-30. James also finished with an impressive +7 indicator. They lost to India A in the Semi-Final by 45-28, meaning they had to play for 3rd place. It was an exciting bronze medal match and England found themselves behind for the majority of the match. In the final leg, James fenced against his teammate, Will Ferguson and managed to win the leg 6-3, winning them the match 38-37.

William Ferguson represented Wales in the men’s epee. Seeded 4th, the team got a bye through the L16. Their L8 match was against Australia B and they won 45-30. Will also managed to get a +7 indicator, significantly helping his team get the win. They lost to India B in the Semi-Final by 45-27 and as mentioned they then lost by a narrow margin of one point in the Bronze Medal Match.

 

Senior Men’s Epee

James Gowen won three and lost two in his poule and got a bye through the L64. He met Rex Burleigh (AUS) in the L32 and fenced confidently, winning 15-8. He met 1st seed Shaurya Ashwini (IND) in the L16 and won 13-9. His L8 was against Marc Burkhalter (WAL) and he lost the bout 15-10.

William Ferguson had a small poule due to two fencers withdrawing. He won two and lost two and got a bye through the L64. In the L32 he had a close match against Reagan Clarke (AUS) and managed to win the final point, finishing the match 15-14. His L16 was vs. Pieter Kruger and he lost the match 15-10.

 

Senior Men’s Sabre

Chalres Gellett won two and lost four of his poule matches. In the L16 he faced Folayemi Akinyosoye (NGR) and lost the bout 15-6.

 

Vet Men’s Epee

David McKay won four and lost one of his poule fights. He got a bye through the L32 and in the L16 he fenced Tonye Sawari (NGR) and kept the match close but unfortunately lost 10-9.

 

Vet Men’s Foil

David McKay also competed in the foil tournament. He began by getting 1V6D in his poule. In the L8 he fenced Alvin Teo (SGP) and lost the match 10-3.
