Oliver Strange wins U23 Commonwealth Fencing Championships!

U23 Men’s Foil

Oliver Strange won all four of his poule matches. He was seeded 1st going into the DEs and got a bye through the L16. His L8 match was against Tushar Kumar (IND) and Oliver won the match 15-5. Having already secured a medal, he fenced fellow Englishman, Thomas James to try and make it to the final stage. Oliver fenced well and managed to get a 15-10 victory and made his way to the Final. He fenced against Tejas Patil (IND) and this definitely proved to be the toughest fight of the competition. In the end Oliver managed to pull ahead and win the match 15-13. He finished the tournament with a gold medal and the title of ‘U23 Commonwealth Fencing Champion’. Congratulations to Oliver for this fantastic result.

Senior Men’s Foil

Oliver Strange also competed in the senior event. He began this tournament by winning all of his five poule fights. Seeded 3rd, he got a bye through the L32. In the L16 he fenced against Jonathan Connery (NIR) and won 15-8. He met Jack Davies (WAL) in the L8 and put on another strong showing, winning 15-6. He had a tough draw in the Semi-Final against David Williams (ENG) but fenced confidently and won the fight 15-8. He went up against an experienced Alex Tofalides (CYP) in the final and unfortunately lost 15-5. He concluded a great couple of individual days by adding a silver medal on top of his gold in the U23 event.

U23 Men’s Epee

William Ferguson won all five of his poule matches. This seeded him 3rd and he got a bye through the L32. In the L16 he met Thomas Linigen (AUS) and won the fight by a comfortable score of 15-6. William was one round off making it to the medals and he lost in the L8 to Shaurya Ashwini (IND) by 15-6. He can still move on from the competition happy with a 5th place finish.

Senior Women’s Sabre

Jenna Bray won two and lost four of her poule bouts. In the L16 she fenced against Sanya Sanya (IND) and kept the fight very close but didn’t quite make it through to the next round, losing 15-13.
